The Federal Government appears to have failed in its bid to convince a key senator to support its FuelWatch bill.
The Government will introduce the FuelWatch bill into Parliament
next week. Its plan is to force petrol stations to set their prices 24
hours in advance is opposed by the Coalition.
Independent Senator Nick Xenaphon has also spoken out against the bill,
prompting the Assistant Treasurer Chris Bowen to travel to Adelaide
this week in the hope of talking him round. But Senator Xenaphon does
not sound convinced. "I haven't seen anything to change my position on
FuelWatch," he said. "There is a real concern that smaller
independent operators will be forced out of business because they can't
compete with the bigger retail operators”.
