AMPOL service station in High Street, Golden Square, has adopted a
pre-paid fuel service after being the victim of numerous
‘‘drive-offs’’. Customers must pre-pay for any fuel at the station
from 6pm to 6am.
Bendigo divisional intelligence unit’s Sergeant Daryl Costelow said
the pre-pay system was a good preventative measure. ‘‘The
pre-paid system has proved extremely effective - it seems to have a led
to a reduction in thefts in other areas of the state,’’ Sergeant
Costelow said. He also said that the incidence of theft of fuel
from service stations was very low in the Bendigo region compared with
metropolitan areas.
Caltex owns the High Street Ampol service station. Although Ampol was
merged with Caltex back in May 1995, the Ampol (Australian Motorist
Petrol Company) brand remains in use in rural locations and where the
brand identity remains strong.
