The ACCC says there is no reason to investigate increases in the difference between wholesale and retail petrol prices.
CommSec's chief economist Craig James says motorists are
experiencing the cheapest petrol prices in two months, but they could
be lower. He says the margin between wholesale and pump prices
has blown out from just over five cents a litre to almost 10 cents a
litre.
Petrol commissioner Joe Dimasi says the margin varies a lot from week
to week, but says the ACCC's monitoring shows the average margin in
Australia has been an acceptable 6.1 cents a litre so far this
year. "At the retail level in the capital cities especially, our
view is that you've got a pretty robust competition going on - that's
not necessarily true everywhere across Australia in the regional
centres but in the capital city competition in fairly robust," he said.
