The government's controversial national FuelWatch scheme has been
successfully referred to the economics committee to report no earlier
than September 29.
The committee will examine the impact of the proposed scheme on the
price consumers will pay for petrol in metropolitan areas, regional
centres and rural Australia.
It will also examine the impact of the scheme on competition between
petrol retailers and the operation and viability of independent motor
fuel retailers and a range of other matters.
FuelWatch is one of eleven bills that the he coalition has used its
Senate majority to delay passage of a range of Rudd government budget
measures. As threatened, the coalition successfully sent 11
budget-related
bills to be scrutinised by committees, scuttling the government's plans
to have the draft laws passed by the end of the month.
