The Malaysian Biofuel Association has said that it is excited by the government’s decision to press ahead with its plan to introduce B10 biofuel, a move that is aimed at reinvigorating the country’s lethargic industry. Under the plan the country’s abundant stock of palm oil will be distributed to the association’s members as feedstock in an effort to calm swelling prices. The MBA represents 22 biodiesel producers.
“The latest measure on the migration from B5 to B10 programme is indeed a boon to biodiesel players,” said UR Unnithan, deputy vice president at the MBA. “I expect about one million tonnes of palm oil will be used and this will definitely reduce the country’s huge palm oil inventory.” The new plan is expected to increase production by around 300,000 tonnes per year.
Biodiesel producers are currently operating under the government’s B5 programme, which began in the middle of last year.
Other biodiesel producers such as Argentina and Columbia are also moving towards implementing plans to distribute higher grade fuel, with Argentina looking to implement a B7 programme by 2015 and Columbia aiming to have B20 circulating through its fuel network by the same time.
