UPM is to invest roughly €150 million in a biorefinery producing biofuels from crude tall oil in Lappeenranta, Finland. The industrial-scale investment is the first of its kind globally and will produce approximately 100,000 tonnes of advanced second-generation biodiesel for transport annually.

The Environmental Protection Agency has ruled that palm oil will not quality as a feedstock for advanced biofuels. If finalised, the ruling will mean that palm oil producers will be unable to break U.S. markets to compete with soyoil and canola feedstock providers.

State-run oil and gas firm Pertamina has announced that it will invest $1.96bn to boost production of LNG between now and 2012. The company said that its investment will feed into Indonesia’s master plan for economic development (MP3EI), which is geared at diversifying consumption, boosting the downstream industry and reducing the burden of subsidising oil-based fuel.

Deloitte Vice Chairman and Automotive Practice Leader Craig Giffi (pictured) has claimed that ‘generation Y’ consumers have demonstrated a marked enthusiasm for hybrid cars, car more so than pure EVs. According to a survey released by Deloitte, members of generation Y (those aged from 19 to 31) demonstrated a marked preference for hybrid gasoline-electric cars: 57% of respondent favoured hybrids over both gasoline-only and pure electric vehicles, favoured by 37% and 2% of respondents respectively.

Global life sciences and materials sciences company Royal DSM and POET, one of the world's largest ethanol producers, have announced a joint venture to commercially demonstrate and license cellulosic bio-ethanol. By the second half of 2013, POET-DSM Advanced Biofuels, LLC will start to produce cellulosic ethanol from corn crop residue through a biological process using enzymatic hydrolysis followed by fermentation.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that significant knowledge gaps on the impact of biofuels is preventing informed policy decisions. After reviewing a decade's worth of research on biofuels, EPA scientists said that little research has been undertaken on the impact of biofuels on biodiversity and human health.
