The United Arab Emirates’ Consumer Protection Department will meet with oil and credit card companies to discuss the possibility of reintroducing credit card payments at the country’s fuel service stations.
The payment method ceased four years ago but a proposal by Emirates Petroleum Corporation (Emarat) to the Supreme Committee for Consumer Protection last week to resume credit card payments will be discussed in the first quarter of this year.
“The committee asked the Consumer Protection Department to meet with oil companies and credit card companies and close the gap between them,” said Dr. Hashem Al Nuaimi, Director General of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry of Economy.
The talks will iron out who will bear the cost of the credit card fees while any reintroduction of a credit card payment facility will only apply to fuel purchases, Al Nuaimi noted.
