Sumbawanga Municipality in Rukwa Region has been going without petrol
for the last two days. A random survey conducted here found that all
six service stations had no fuel.
Service station workers declined to comment on the matter, on grounds that they were not spokespersons. "Our boss said that there is no fuel in our main storage depot for the past two days and we’re not expecting to receive any consignment from Dar es Salaam soon," said one of the employees at Oilcom service station. The six filling stations attendants including SB 06 and Tawqal, however, said other petroleum products such as diesel and kerosene were in abundant supply.
But the oil dealers have defied the directive issued recently by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) to lower retail prices. The survey reveals that diesel and kerosene were sold at 1,550/ and 1,100/ per litre respectively although according to EWURA directives, the prices should be 1,450/, 1,250/ and 850/ per litre for petrol, diesel and kerosene respectively.
