Several new oil storage companies could enter the South African market soon after the National Energy Regulator (NERSA) took the decision to revoke some operators’ licences. The announcement comes after the Department of Energy accused industry authorities of being too slow in bringing about a promised transformation in the industry.
The Chairwoman of NERSA, Cecilia Khuzwayo, said that large storage facilities would be expanding and taking over smaller facilites, while smaller companies would cease trading or move their operations elsewhere. Some of the smaller fuel depots have been decommissioned altogether.
NERSA is looking over a total of133 applications for licenses, it said, while Chevron SA and BP are among those who will soon be without licenses. BP will no longer be operating through its small airport network, according to the regulator. Airports BP currently service include Vryheid, Umtata and Polowane. Chevron has asked the authority to take back its licenses for operating at its Bloemfontein, Welkom and Queenstown depots.
