Total and Shell have moved to allay fears of fuel shortages in South Africa after a number of fuel service stations in Guateng ran out of certain grades of fuel last week. In a statement, Shell South Africa said that the supply of fuel to its Guateng stations, which had been affected by a shutdown at its fuel depot in Alberton, would improve over the course of week.
Normal fuel delivery services began from December 24, the company said, following a December 16 leak. "We still have a significant delivery backlog to clear. We regret the inconvenience caused to our retailers and the public," noted Shell.
Fuel shortages also arose from a technical problem at the country’s largest crude oil refinery, a Single Buoy Mooring (SBM) facility south of Durban. Total South Africa, which confirmed that it had been affected by the issue, said it had implemented emergency supply measures.
