Engen Petroleum has insisted that it remains committed to its refinery at Durbin, contradicting media reported that the company was considering exiting the facility. "Our shareholders have also given their assurance that they are committed to the Engen refinery," said Managing Director and CEO Nizam Salleh.
Salleh moved to defuse speculation about a letter to colleagues suggesting that the company "reappraise the business model" in the face of opposition from local authorities about pollution problems. He insisted that the company would continually examine its business model, adding "This is nothing new in the world of business." Salleh also said that the company continually worked to ensure it met regulatory requirements, including health, safety and environmental regulations, and to reduce its environmental impact.
