South Africa’s Energy Minister, Dipuo Peters (pictured), has said he will conduct an audit of the country’s refineries in the wake of several unplanned shutdowns. Peters said the audit will establish the reliability, availability, and capacities of different facilities.
In the past month, South Africa experienced fuel shortages following planned and unplanned shutdowns at four of the country’s six refineries. PetroSA had recommenced production at its 45,000 bpd facility, but the 125,000 bpd Engen refinery remains shut, along with a 180,000 bpd Sapref refinery. In recent years, the Government has been pressing companies to upgrade their refineries to improve capacity and meet new fuel specifications, with a deadline for improvements set at 2017.
