BP's pioneer acceptance of debit cards to pay for petrol appears to be
successful and likely to spread to other service station networks.
After the system was introduced by BP last year, 425 of its 573
filling stations now allowed debit card payments. This reduced
cash transactions by more than R280m and decreased chances of armed
robberies at petrol stations, the report read.
Shell Southern Africa recently piloted debit card payments at selected
service stations. The company said it would monitor and test the debit
card payment system before considering a full launch to all its
stations.
"Since the launch of the pilot we have noticed an increase in customers
who preferred to use their debit cards to cash. The attraction seems to
be the comfort of not taking cash directly out of their pockets," said
Shell Southern African spokesperson Dennis Matsane.
The Engen group said it had been watching the debit card payment option
with interest, but had not yet made any concrete decisions.
