Petrol attendants need more security, the National Union of
Metalworkers (Numsa) said this week after a fatal attack on a Soweto
petrol attendant.
Numsa motor sector spokesperson, Elias Kubheka, said the union had held
preliminary discussions with the Fuel Retailers Association (FRA)
regarding [the attack on Zola petrol attendant Armando Muhaswa] and the
overall safety of the lives of petrol station workers.
"We agreed that there is a need for a comprehensive safety and security plan for this sector of the economy," he said.
Numsa called for the SA Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA) and
security companies to ensure the presence of security patrols at and
around petrol stations and the proper
functioning of closed circuit television systems at petrol
stations. The union called for motorists to pay before receiving
fuel.
Numsa urged the SA Police Service to increase their patrols and
visibility around petrol stations. The union urged attendants to report
customers who refused to pay for petrol rather than argue with them.
Numsa was also urging attendants to report suspicious behaviour around
the station and around ATMs, said Kubheka.
