A growing mafia influence has curtailed the power of customs officials to control the smuggling of Iranian petrol and diesel into Pakistan, it has emerged today.
A report outlining the extent of the illegal activity, compiled by the Model Customs Collectorate Quetta, was presented to Pakistan’s Federal Board of Revenue. Local media claim say that the report has identified many of the parties involved but admitted that, due to immense pressure put on customs officials stationed on the Pakistan-Iran border from powerful mafia gangs, the authorities could do little to prevent it. The offenders use vans with brand names of major oil companies to carry out the activity.
Customs have called on Government to regularise the import of Iranian diesel by private firms into the country to ease the growing pressure on border patrols.
