Refiner Orpic has announced that it will add three more units to its proposed expansion project for the Sohar refinery. The project, which is being supported by the Omani Government, is expected to increase output by over 70% and improve product quality.
R.P. Singh, the General Manager of the project, explained that the plans now included a delayed coker unit, a bitumen blowing unite, and an mtbe unit to enhance gasoline production. These add to existing plans for a crude and vacuum distillation units, a hydrocracker, sulphur recover units, isomerization units and more.
The Sohar facility has recently been operating at high utilisation rates that reached 110% of design capacity. The expansion project at the facility, which was commissioned in 2006, will cost an estimated $1.5bn.
The front end engineering design for the project was begun earlier this year, while specialist contracts for several units have also been awarded. The engineering, procurement and construction contract is due to be floated in 2012, with an expected commissioning date of 2016.
