A leading Nigerian Government official has said that a federal government u-turn on the relocation on petroleum product tank farms was the result of intense lobbying from tank farm owners, according to national publication This Day.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the government source told This Day that no action has been taken since a 2009 report revealed that some tank forms were operating below the standard recommended by the Department of Petroleum Resources, while others were located near sensitive areas such as schools and residential areas.
An inspection committee found that some tank farms were too dangerous to enter and recommended their relocation as well as sanctions and fines for those that did not meet sufficient safety standards. However, according to the source, the Federal Government is unlikely to move ahead with the report’s recommendations due to pressure from lobby groups.
