The Zonal Secretary for the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas
workers, Alhaji Tokunbo Korodo confirmed that the fuel tankers drivers
strike has been called off.
The statement came at the week end after a meeting with Lagos State
Government in Alausa. The tanker drivers had embarked on a strike
about two days ago due to the allegation that officials of Lagos State
Traffic Management Authority extorted them.
According to a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and jointly
signed by the Chairman, Petroleum Tanker Drivers, Mr. Jide Kilanko,
NUPENG Secretary, Korodo, Director of Transport Operations, Lagos
Ministry of Transportation and the Special Adviser to the Governor on
Transportation, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, the union said tankers would return
to Lagos streets to service filling stations without any delay.
The communiqué reads: “We have agreed in the spirit of our resolution
at Akodo in August 2007 to continue to work in harmonious relationship;
it is confirmed that fuel is available in all petrol stations and there
is no need for panic.”
Speaking on the outcome of the meeting, Opeifa stated that the state
government had discussed at length with the NUPENG and tanker drivers,
adding that the differences had been resolved.
Opeifa stated that government would not condone any individual or group
of people to abandon vehicle on the road, saying, “Government is
concerned about safety, while NUPENG is concerned about service. We
must both work together to service the people.” Meanwhile, there were
initial fears that the looming fuel scarcity would drag on into the
yuletide season as long queues have started forming in several fuel
stations across Lagos.
