Several fuel service station operators in Kano State have stopped serving customers despite having plenty fuel to sell and showing no concern about a possible shortage. Other retailers - including stations operated by the state-run NNPC - have raised their prices.
"We don't know the reason behind the scarcity of the commodity because our members are still finding it difficult to purchase at the NNPC. We are not happy with the current fuel scarcity in the state because it has seriously affected our business," said Alhaji Bashir Bello, chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria. Bello also said that he is appealing to the country's federal government to supply fuel in the meantime.
Some media in the country are reporting that closed operators are selling their available stock to illegal market dealers.
