The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) sealed six fuel
distribution outlets in Lagos for alleged profiteering at the expense
of their customers.
The Assistant Chief Petroleum Inspection Officer, Lagos Zone, Mr. Patrick Emordi, said that the fuel outlets were caught selling kerosene at N95 per litre, which was far above government’s approved price of N40.75 per litre.
Emordi said that DPR was worried that the depots could sell above approved price despite receiving about 10,000 metric tonnes each from the Pipelines and Products Marketing Company Limited (PPMC) this month.
Our correspondent quotes Emordi as saying that “PPMC flooded the market with kerosene at a subsidised rate so as to reduce the price. “This was done to forestall sharp practices and we had a meeting with depot operators in August when we found that they are profiteering,” he said.
It was reported that when DPR got to each of the depots, the managers denied the allegation. The managers claimed that the product in their tanks belonged to other marketers with whom they had a bargain.
