The Department of Petroleum Resources on Monday sealed off 55 petrol
stations in order to ensure that the downstream sector operators obey
the law guiding operation in the nation’s petroleum industry.
According to the DPR, this move is to demonstrate that oil marketers
operating in the sector cannot take laws into their hands by selling
above the official price. Head, Public Affairs Unit in the department,
Mrs. Belema Osibodu in a statement last week.
Osibodu noted that some of the affected oil firms were also found to
have contravened the laws guiding the oil and gas sector and they were
penalised for various offences ranging from hoarding of fuel, selling
to jerry can owners, cheating on motorists, selling above official
price and diversion of products.
The closures were spread throughout the coutnry. The DPR’s spokes
person said that in Kaduna State and its environs, about 12 petrol
stations were shut down, while in Lagos and the Federal Capital
Territory, Abuja, about two and 15 petrol stations were sealed
respectively. In Kano, six petrol stations were closed down, while a
total of 12 petrol stations were sealed off in Sokoto and its environs.
