Unleaded fuel shortages have been experienced in Nairobi over recent days.
A survey carried out by local media (The Nation) revealed that
unleaded petrol was not available in most petrol stations. Sources from
Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) attributed increased demand for super
petrol to the recent price reduction, but retail outlet owners said the
shortage, which started last weekend, persisted because getting enough
fuel stocks was difficult.
In western Kenya, consumers have protested over the high fuel prices,
as a shortage of petroleum products continues. Petrol was retailing at
Sh88.50 per litre in most filling stations while diesel was going for
Sh74.50. KPC acting regional manager Xavier Baraza said the region was
receiving about 5.6 million litres of fuel against a daily demand of
more than six million litres. “There has been an unsteady supply of
some petroleum products to depots in the region for the past few days,”
he said. About 70 per cent of fuel pumped to depots in the region ends
up in the export market.
