The tenders are conducted every month. Documents were opened at the
Ministry of Energy headquarters in Nairobi and supervised by the tender
committee.
Kenol has won a tender to supply 80,000 tonnes of murban crude and 80,000 tonnes of arab medium through the open tender system for the month of January. Gulf Energy won the tender to supply 11,000 tonnes of premium, Chevron 18,000 tonnes of jet and National Oil Corporation of Kenya will supply 21,000 tonnes of gas oil.
The deals come when oil prices have been on a downward trend from a high of $147 several months ago to just over $40 in the last week. It is expected that this oil cargo for January will reflect the reduced international prices. The government recently released a formula that will act as a price guide among fuel retailers. It is, however, yet to be adopted pending public input. The January oil cargo could be the first consignment to retail under the new guidelines.
