The Kenyan Government is aiming to better secure its long-term fuel supply by constructing a new oil pipeline from Mombasa to Nairobi, and has invited firms to tender to consult on the project. The new, larger pipeline will replace an existing pipeline that, officials say, has only six years of life left.
"We did an internal inspection last October, which shows that the existing line cannot last beyond 2017, even with repairs," said Kenya Pipeline Company’s Managing Director, Selest Kilinda. The existing pipeline was laid in 1978.
Consulting companies will be expected to carry out a detailed engineering design, forecast demand growth and supervise the construction of the line's wider diameter. The tender process is open to firms with an annual turnover of over $750 000. The Government aims to begin construction in the second quarter of 2012, with a targeted construction time of two years.
